Why Sri Lankans want a chat without a camera
Sri Lanka is a place where people know people. A face on a webcam site can be recognised, screenshotted and shared within a day, which is why a lot of Sri Lankans avoid random video chat altogether. Chitmet has no camera. You talk by text or by a browser voice call, and the other person sees the show name you choose and your gender, never your face.
That makes it useful for the things people actually want: practising spoken English without being judged, talking to someone outside the usual circle of school, office and family, or just having a conversation late at night when everyone at home is asleep.
When Sri Lanka is online
With the Sri Lanka filter on, the busiest time is about 9 pm to midnight Sri Lanka time. The country shares its clock with India (UTC+5:30), so with the country set to Any country and Tamil or English chosen, a Sri Lankan evening is also an Indian evening and the queue is rarely empty.
Sri Lankans working in the Gulf are only one and a half to two and a half hours behind, so their evening and yours overlap. If the Sri Lanka-only queue is quiet, set the country filter to Preferred instead of Strict: Chitmet starts with Sri Lanka and widens step by step while you wait.
Sinhala, Tamil and English
Tamil speakers can set the language filter to Tamil and the country to Sri Lanka for people close to home, or leave the country open to meet Tamil speakers in India, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada and the UK. The Tamil chat page has openers and tips if you want a better first line than "hi".
For Sinhala, pick Sinhala (සිංහල) in the filter — or English, the widest queue, and switch to Sinhala once you know the other person speaks it. There is a page for it too: Sinhala chat. Mixing Sinhala and English in one sentence is completely fine. Add interests — Sports, Music, Movies, Study, Travel, Food — and Chitmet shows what you share the moment you connect; pick Sports and cricket is a safe opener.
Privacy and safety
Your email and phone number are never shared, and calls are not recorded by Chitmet. Photos and voice notes only work after the other person allows media. If a chat is good, send a Keep in touch request — you only become friends if the other person accepts. If you skip by accident, Undo skip appears for a few seconds.
If anyone asks for money, a reload, bank details, or to move to another app straight away, use Report and Block. Automated checks flag spam and scam links in real time, and human moderators review reports. Chitmet is 18+ only, and a text chat becomes a voice call only when both people agree.
