Quick picks
Ten sites, four kinds:
- Text, with the option of a voice call, and free filters for country, language, interests and mood — Chitmet: no sign-up, no camera, 32 languages, human moderators.
- Pure text and nothing else — OpenTalk or PlainYou: no voice, no video, no account; PlainYou does not even ask for a nickname.
- Text or voice with a published moderation policy and an Android app — HearMe Chat; or the veteran voice-first site with country preferences — AirTalk; or tap-to-call with streaks — TalkLive.
- Text mode on a site that also has video — OddHello, Omingle or StrangerMeet: pick "text" at the start and the camera stays off.
- Browse people rather than get matched — ChatAlya: pick a nickname, age, gender and city, then choose who to message.
How we compared them
Every fact below comes from the service’s own homepage or text-chat page, read on 7 November 2026, and each row says what the site says about itself rather than what we tested. Sites this new change weekly, so check the page before you rely on a detail. We make Chitmet, so we are not neutral; where another site does something Chitmet does not, we say so.
| Service | Text-only? | Sign-up | Choose who you meet | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chitmet | Text, or a voice call when both accept; no video | None | Country (any, free), language (32, free), interests, topic, mood; gender filter in Premium | Games in chat, Keep in Touch, human moderators; nobody can see that you are online |
| OpenTalk | Text only — "no video" | None | None | Shows how many people are chatting; reports reviewed by a person; explicit language filtered at send; not the OpenTalk app |
| PlainYou | Text only — no voice, no video | None, not even a nickname | None | Messages go browser-to-browser over WebRTC, so the other person can see your IP address (its own words); no history kept |
| HearMe Chat | Text or voice; no video | None (free account adds friends) | Interest tags free; gender and country filters are Premium ($4.99–$9.99 a month) | Every report reviewed by a person; Android app; games in text |
| AirTalk | Text or voice; no video | None | Preferred and excluded countries; no language filter | Icebreaker questions; links and social handles blocked at send; optional premium extras |
| TalkLive | Text or voice; no camera | None | Gender filter and 2 preferred + 2 avoided countries free | An "Online Now" list shows names, gender and country; streaks; Premium not on sale |
| OddHello | Text or video — you choose at the start | None | Up to 10 interests; optional country label | Icebreaker dice; on-device video screening; 18+ box to tick |
| Omingle | Text or video — you choose at the start | None; optional name | Up to 5 interests | Offers AI "companions" (Maya, Aisha…) when nobody is online — some labelled "flirty" |
| StrangerMeet | Text, video, group chat (3–10) or rooms | None | Country pages (Pakistan and others) | Shows a live online count |
| ChatAlya | Text with photos, GIFs and voice messages; no video | Nickname, age, gender, location | You browse people by age, gender and city — not random matching | Messages disappear by default; AI moderation; site in 40 languages |
Pure text: OpenTalk and PlainYou
If you want typing and nothing else, these two are the most literal answer.
- OpenTalk (opentalk.buzz) — "Free anonymous text chat … no signup, no download, no video." One-to-one, matched in seconds, Skip to move on. A report button in the chat header with reports "reviewed by a person", explicit language filtered as messages are sent, and a counter of people chatting right now. It is not the OpenTalk app and says so. Best for: the simplest text-only chat. Watch out for: no filters are mentioned anywhere on its pages.
- PlainYou (plainyou.cyou) — Text only, "no names, no history, no sign-up" — it does not even ask for a nickname. Messages travel browser-to-browser over WebRTC rather than through a chat server, which is why nothing is stored; the flip side, in its own words, is that "your IP address is still visible to the person you are paired with". Best for: a chat that leaves no trace on a server. Watch out for: the IP exposure, and no moderation beyond skip and block.
Text with a voice option: Chitmet, HearMe Chat, AirTalk, TalkLive
Text first, and a call if the conversation earns it. None of these four has a camera.
- Chitmet (chitmet.gg) — One-on-one text chat; either person can turn it into an audio-only call when both accept. The country filter (any country, "preferred" or "only"), the language filter (32 languages — Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Arabic, French, Spanish, Swahili and more), interests, topic and mood are all free, and a Vibe Match score shows what you share. Games in chat (Would You Rather, trivia, 20 Questions), Keep in Touch to add someone after a good chat, Skip, Report and Block, automatic spam and scam-link checks, human moderators, 18+. Nobody can see that you are online. Best for: choosing the language and country you talk in without paying. Watch out for: the gender filter and sending photos or voice notes are Premium.
- HearMe Chat (hearme.chat) — Voice or text with one stranger at a time, no camera, no sign-up, an Android app on Google Play, in-chat games on the text side, and a moderation queue where "every report is reviewed by a person". Free accounts add friends and direct messages. Best for: a published safety policy and an app icon. Watch out for: the gender filter and the country filter are both Premium ($4.99–$9.99 a month).
- AirTalk (airtalk.live) — Voice-first since 2022, with a text chat that starts "the second you press Start". Preferred and excluded countries, ready-made icebreaker questions, friends, and a text chat that can become a voice call mid-conversation; links and social handles are blocked at send. No language filter. Best for: a random call with a country preference. Watch out for: it mentions optional premium extras without listing them.
- TalkLive (talklive.app) — "Talk to strangers by voice or text": tap to call and a random adult’s browser rings; text needs no microphone. Free: a gender filter, two preferred and two avoided countries, friends, daily streaks. Best for: voice calls with a streak. Watch out for: the home page lists people who are online by name, gender and country.
Text mode on a video site: OddHello, Omingle, StrangerMeet
These lead with video but let you pick text at the start, so the camera never comes on. The crowd is shared with the video side.
- OddHello (oddhello.chat) — "Choose text or video"; text "needs no camera or microphone". Up to 10 interests, an optional country label, a box to confirm you are 18+, icebreaker dice while you wait, and on-device screening of incoming video for the people who do use it. An independent project by CritHit Studio. Best for: interest-matched text with a playful waiting room.
- Omingle (omingle.chat) — Text or video, optional name, up to 5 interests, 18+ box. One thing to know before you start: when nobody is online it offers "companions" — AI characters with names, cities and ages, several labelled "flirty" — and the home page greets you with one of them "online now". If you want a human every time, that is a reason to look elsewhere.
- StrangerMeet (strangermeet.org) — Random text ("one stranger at a time, text only"), video, group chat with three to ten people, and chat rooms, plus country pages such as Pakistan. Shows a live online count. Best for: group text when one-on-one feels quiet.
Not random at all: ChatAlya
ChatAlya (chatalya.com) is a different shape. You pick a nickname, age, gender and location, then browse people online by age, gender and city and message whoever you like; there is no random pairing. Messages disappear by default, you can send photos, GIFs and voice messages, moderation is described as AI-based, and the site itself is offered in about 40 languages. It states plainly that it is not a dating platform. Best for: choosing a person rather than rolling the dice. Watch out for: a directory of people is also a directory of you.
Three things to check on any new chat site
Is the stranger a person? Omingle advertises AI companions for quiet hours; OpenTalk, StrangerMeet, HearMe Chat and ChatAlya show live online counts; Chitmet runs no bots and shows no counts at all. A site that never has a quiet moment is worth a second look.
Where do your messages travel? PlainYou sends them browser-to-browser, which means no server copy but a visible IP address. Most others relay through their own servers and say what they keep: HearMe Chat holds text for 24 hours for reports; Chitmet keeps chats for registered people who want to reread them and does not record calls.
Who reads the reports? OpenTalk and HearMe Chat say a person does; Chitmet has human moderators plus automatic spam and scam-link checks; Omingle and ChatAlya describe automatic filtering. Whatever the site, keep your number, address, workplace and money out of the chat, and leave the moment it feels wrong — the safety guide below has the longer version.
