The short answer
If you want conversation rather than a webcam, these are the picks:
- Best overall without a camera — Chitmet: one-on-one text chat and audio-only voice calls, free interest, country and language filters, no sign-up, and no video mode at all.
- Best voice-only site — HereSay: anonymous voice calls in the browser, “no video”, no account needed to call, 18+.
- Best voice-first veteran — AirTalk: random voice chat since 2022, text added later, no camera and no sign-up; preferred and excluded countries, no language filter.
- Closest to Omegle’s text mode — Umingle (formerly Uhmegle) and Joingy: pick “text”, no account, fully random.
- Best text mode with interest matching — Emerald Chat (one-on-one text) and Thundr (text, but you must sign in).
- Best if you prefer rooms — Chatib (18+ text rooms) rather than one stranger at a time.
How we checked
For each service we opened its official website or app-store listing in October 2026 and noted the things that matter when you do not want to be on camera: is there a text mode, is there an audio-only voice mode, is video optional or required, do you need an account or a phone number, which filters are free, what costs money, and whether the site is clearly 18+. Where a site’s own page did not say something, the table says “not stated” rather than guessing.
Disclosure: Chitmet is our product, so we are not neutral. We have described every service from its own materials, including where another site is the better pick — a voice-only site, a chat-room site, an app with group calls — and linked our detailed side-by-side pages where we have them.

Built without a camera: the five that never ask for one
These services were designed around text and voice, so there is no “turn on your webcam” prompt to dodge.
- Chitmet (chitmet.gg) — One tap matches you one-on-one with a stranger for a private text chat; if you both agree, it becomes an audio-only voice call that runs in the browser with no phone number involved. There is no video mode and the site never requests camera access. Interest, country and language filters (32 languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Urdu, Arabic, Spanish and French) are free, a Vibe Match score shows what you share, and Keep in Touch lets you add someone you clicked with. Every chat has Skip, Report and Block; scam links and number-fishing are flagged automatically; calls are not recorded by Chitmet (only a reported call’s last few minutes reach moderators, deleted after 7 days). Optional Premium adds a gender filter, sending photos and voice notes, ghost mode and avatars — safety tools stay free. 18+. Best for: real conversations with people who speak your language. Watch out for: it is new (launched September 2026), so evenings are busier than mornings.
- HereSay (heresay.live) — Anonymous voice calls with random strangers in the browser, plus “broadcast” rooms you can drop into as a listener. Its homepage says “No video” and “No profiles visible during calls. Just voices.” You can call without an account (one is needed to broadcast); a mic is the only requirement. Unlimited calls, broadcasts and basic matching are free; gender, age and interest filters are listed under a Premium plan that the site says is not live yet. 18+, with a mid-call Report button that ends the call and moves you on. Best for: people who want to talk, or just listen, and never type. Watch out for: no text mode, and the Premium details were still changing when we checked.
- AirTalk (airtalk.live) — The veteran of random voice chat: audio-only calls since 2022, with text chat added later and the option to turn a text chat into a call when both agree. No camera, no sign-up. Matching is random within the countries you prefer or exclude (its text-chat page, November 2026); there is no language or gender filter and no photos or voice notes. Best for: a quick voice call with anyone, anywhere. Watch out for: no control over who you meet beyond country.
- Whisperly (whisperly.live) — “Talk to strangers by voice or text”, positioned as an Omegle and Emerald Chat alternative that “does not force video”. Random voice and text chat, one-on-one conversations and rooms, no sign-up for the basics, an optional Android app for private messages and call notifications, and “free to start”. Its site does not state an age rule or what paid features include, and its user numbers are self-reported. Best for: trying voice and text in one place. Watch out for: fewer stated safety details than the others here.
- Wakie (iOS and Android app) — Founded in 2011 as a social alarm clock and relaunched in 2014 as a voice app, Wakie connects you for one-on-one and group voice conversations around topics and clubs, with a public text feed. It is app-only, needs an account, is rated 18+, and sells Wakie Plus and coins. One honest note: its App Store listing now says “Meet in voice & video chats” — video calls exist, but they are optional and the voice rooms remain the point. Best for: group voice conversations on a topic. Watch out for: the most sign-up data of any service in this guide.
Text mode inside video sites: good, with one catch
Six well-known random chat sites offer an Omegle-style “text” option next to their video mode. They work without a camera — but remember that the people on the other end chose a video site, so expect more “cam?” requests and faster skips than on the services above.
- Emerald Chat (emeraldchat.com) — One-on-one text chat with interest matching and a karma system, next to one-on-one video and group chat. No voice-only mode. Its FAQ now says an account (email and password) is required, the gender filter sits behind the paid Emerald Gold tier, and the site states no minimum age. Best for: text chat matched by interests. Watch out for: the account requirement.
- Umingle, formerly Uhmegle (umingle.com) — The closest thing to Omegle’s original text mode: pick text or video, add interest tags, choose a country, no account. There is no voice-only mode and no gender filter (asking for one breaks its rules). Best for: the classic feel. Watch out for: no language filter.
- Joingy (joingy.com) — Free, browser-based text or webcam chat since 2018, no registration, with a flag button after each chat. Matching is fully random and interest matching is still marked “coming soon”. Best for: zero setup. Watch out for: no filters at all.
- Thundr (thundr.com) — Text or video, matched by the interests you pick, with gender and location filters and an Android app. You must sign in (username and password, or Google/Apple) and coins and Boosts cost money. Best for: interest matching with a text option. Watch out for: the account requirement.
- Chatrandom (chatrandom.com) — Random webcam chat since 2011 that allows text-only, with themed rooms and mobile apps. Its own site says webcam users get more matches, and gender and location filters are part of the paid Plus plan. Best for: themed rooms on your phone. Watch out for: text users are second-class by design.
- Chitchat (chitchat.gg) — A large text-and-video random chat site with interest, gender and region filters, media sharing, live moderation and a friends list. Its text mode “needs no camera or microphone” and no registration; video asks for a free sign-up. No voice-only mode, no dedicated language filter, and no stated minimum age (it says users flagged as underage must pass an age check). Best for: a busy all-in-one site. Watch out for: video-first crowd.
Chat rooms instead of one stranger at a time
If “random” is the part of Omegle you did not like, a text room lets you pick who to talk to.
- Chatib (chatib.us) — Public rooms (Dating, Singles, US, Music, College and more) plus private messages, image sharing and small games. Guests choose a username, gender, age and location; free registration adds GIFs, a friends list and offline messages. Text-based and 18+. Best for: hanging out in a room. Watch out for: rooms are public, so keep details private.
- TalkWithStranger (talkwithstranger.com) — Free text chat rooms with a random one-on-one option, voice calls and video listed too, no registration, browser and app. It describes itself as “free for everyone” with ads and claims human moderation plus automated filtering. The reason it is last on this list: its site says it is “open to chat for all ages” and states no minimum age, which for an anonymous stranger-chat site is a red flag for adults and minors alike. Best for: casual rooms. Watch out for: no 18+ rule.
Text or voice: which should you pick?
Text is the easier start. You can chat from a bus, a library or bed, think before you answer, and leave without a word. It is also the better choice on slow mobile data and in languages you read better than you speak. Voice is closer to meeting someone: tone, laughter and silences come through, a ten-minute call tells you more than an hour of typing, and it is the best way to practise a language. It needs a quiet place and a little nerve.
The sites that let you move from one to the other win on both counts. On Chitmet and AirTalk a text chat becomes a voice call only when both people accept, so you can warm up in writing and switch when it feels right — and go back to text if it does not.
What “no camera” should actually mean
Before you trust a site’s “no webcam needed” line, check these five things. They separate a camera-free service from a video site with a text button.
- It never asks the browser for camera permission. A service built around text and voice has nothing to ask for.
- Text users are not penalised. Chatrandom tells you webcam users get more matches; on a true no-camera site everyone is equal.
- Voice calls run in the browser or app without your phone number, and the site says whether calls are recorded. (Chitmet: not recorded; only a reported call’s last minutes reach moderators.)
- There is a stated 18+ rule, and Report and Block sit inside every chat — not in a settings menu three taps away.
- You can start with a nickname. Phone-number sign-up on a stranger-chat site is a bigger privacy risk than any camera.
Still want video sometimes?
Then you want a site where video is optional and moderated, not a camera-free one. Our full guide to the best Omegle alternatives covers the video-first services too — OmeTV, Chatroulette, ChatHub, Camsurf and Monkey — with the same checks. And whatever you use, the habits in our safety guide apply: keep your name, number, address and money to yourself, and leave any chat that pushes you to another app.
New since October 2026: the no-camera wave
Between mid-October and early November 2026 a group of new sites launched around the same no-camera idea. One line each, from their own pages on 7 November 2026; the full comparison is in our text-only sites guide.
- TalkLive (talklive.app) — random voice calls and text, no sign-up; a gender filter and 2 preferred + 2 avoided countries free; an "Online Now" list of names and countries; Premium not on sale.
- HearMe Chat (hearme.chat) — voice or text, no camera, Android app, every report reviewed by a person; gender and country filters are Premium ($4.99–$9.99 a month).
- OpenTalk (opentalk.buzz) — text only, no video, no account; reports reviewed by a person; not the OpenTalk app.
- PlainYou (plainyou.cyou) — text only with no nickname; messages go browser-to-browser, so the other person can see your IP address (its own words).
- OddHello (oddhello.chat) — text or video, up to 10 interests, icebreaker dice; by CritHit Studio.
- Omingle (omingle.chat) — text or video; offers AI "companions" when nobody is online.
- StrangerMeet (strangermeet.org) — text, video, group chat and rooms, with country pages.
