Why South Africans want a chat without video
Random video sites are heavy on data, need a strong connection and put your face on someone else’s screen, where it can be recorded and passed on. For most people that is three good reasons to stay away. Chitmet has no camera at all: you talk by text, or by a voice call that runs inside the browser, and the other person sees the show name you choose and your gender, never your face.
It also works wherever you are — in a taxi, on a lunch break, in a res room, on a night shift — because nobody needs to see you or what is behind you. All it takes is a browser and a few spare minutes.
When South Africa is online
With the South Africa filter on, the busiest time is roughly 8 pm to midnight SAST. South Africa does not change its clocks, so during the British winter it is two hours ahead of London, and during the British summer just one. Nigeria is an hour behind, Kenya an hour ahead.
That means a South African evening overlaps with evenings across most of Africa and Europe. If the local queue is quiet, set the country filter to Preferred instead of Strict — Chitmet starts with South Africa and widens step by step — or set it to Any country and keep English as the language.
Languages and good openers
South Africa has a dozen official languages, and English is the only one of them in Chitmet’s language filter. That is less of a limit than it sounds: choose English, and once you find someone from home, switch to isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sepedi, Setswana or whatever you both speak. "Howzit?" is a perfectly good first message.
Add interests before you start — Sports, Music, Movies, Gaming, Business, Cars, Food — and Chitmet shows what you share the moment you connect. Pick Sports and you can argue about the Springboks or Bafana Bafana; pick Music and amapiano will probably come up.
Staying safe
Your email and phone number are never shared with the people you talk to, and calls are not recorded by Chitmet. Photos and voice notes only come through after the other person allows media. If a chat is good, send a Keep in touch request; you only become friends if the other person accepts. Skipped too fast? Undo skip appears for a few seconds.
If someone asks for money, airtime, data, vouchers or an eWallet transfer, offers an investment that "can’t lose", or wants to move to another app straight away, that is a scam pattern — Report and Block. Chitmet never asks for payment to chat; Premium is optional and only adds extras like a gender filter.
